Teams of two to six individuals will be given a design challenge and all the materials needed on the day of the competition and then race against the clock, and the other teams, to see who can design, build and test the most successful solution to the challenge. Teams compete in one of three categories: Youth (middle through high school students), Corporate (adult teams or college students) and Families.
New for the competition this year is an auction by professional auctioneer Bob Hale in which teams will be able to bid on materials that could improve their designs (and their chances to win)! Teams will also be able to bid on items that will slow down their competitors. The funds raised in the auction by corporate and family teams will support the Science Center’s education programs. School groups will each be given “play money” so that they will be able to participate in the auction as well.
Tentative Schedule

9:30 am - Check-in
10 am - Challenge revealed and explained
10:15 am - Design & Build begins
11:45 am - Teams must be finished designing and building
12 pm (noon) - Competition begins
1 pm - Competition ends, Award Ceremony Begins
1:30 pm - Pizza Lunch & Networking
Sponsorship Information
$1,000 – Design & Build Youth or Family Sponsored Teams receive
(Either a team of your choice or GLSC will be happy to select a team at your request):
- Access for one youth or family team (with one adult mentor) (two – six members)
- Name recognition in on-site, event related signage and program
- Discounted parking in attached garage for team members (or their drivers)*
- Free general admission for team members including Ripley’s Believe it or Not traveling exhibition*
- Vouchers for discounted admission to Great Lakes Science Center for family and friends*
- All materials necessary to meet the challenge
$1,500 – Design & Build Supporting Sponsors receive:
- Access for one corporate or college team (two – six members)
- Name recognition on dedicated webpage
- Logo recognition in on-site, event related signage and program
- Free parking in attached garage for team members*
- Discounted parking in attached garage for team members’ guests*
- Free general admission for team members including Ripley’s Believe It or Not traveling exhibition *
- Vouchers for discounted admission to Great Lakes Science Center for family and friends including Ripley’s Believe It or Not traveling exhibition*
- All materials necessary to meet the challenge
$5,000 – Design & Build Presenting Sponsors receive:
- Access for one corporate team (two – six members)
- Sponsorship of one additional corporate team or one college, youth or family team
- Logo/name recognition on webpage & social media
- Logo recognition in all on-site, event related signage and program
- Name recognition in all PR materials
- Free parking in attached garage for team members*
- Discounted parking for team members’ guests*
- Free general admission for team members and guests (up to 6 guests per team), includes admission to Ripley’s Believe It or Not traveling exhibition*
- Vouchers for discounted admission to Great Lakes Science Center for family and friends*
- All materials necessary to meet the challenge
